I like that hopeful interpretation as much as the sad one. I think it used to be a happy song that is sad now. That it is a proud and happy day to see them walking back after being gone. I think Iroh used to sing it to Lu Ten on his birthday, reminding him of the fragility that humans have, and how important it is to appreciate them coming home. But if you take it literally, then its a song about someone beaten and weak from war finally coming home to those they love, and those who waited being proud of their soldier. It is only sad when you interpret the song as the loss of a loved one.

The song is clearly a lullaby and obviously brings joy to the boy, and has pleasant intentions. But I think that when Iroh sings it to the little boy crying is a lot more insightful. And that’s okay too, just as much as it’s okay to write a fic where Azula is an out and proud lesbian coming straight out of the gate.Reposting some stuff about Leaves from the Vine People always talk about Leaves From the Vine in a sad context since the scene it is in is truly sad. I may never find a definitive answer for her in this fic. Maybe I’m old now and still stuck in the days when the queer experience was so dangerous we didn’t have as much patience for fighting about who has it better, but it really does bother me how much friction there is between queer identities now, and how many people want to turn each experience into a walled garden with no solidarity between them (see the battle between comphet vs bi-erasure, whether bi women can use the word lesbian or not, talk of “het passing”, etc.) What I do hope, instead, is that her experience figuring this out (as i figure it out writing her) can resonate with people. And I’m uninterested in deciding flat out if she’s a lesbian, or bi/pan, or if she’s homoromantic ace. Of course, anyone who can read between the lines can tell by chapter two that she is in fact hopelessly in love with Mai, and probably with Ty Lee as well. She also has few friends, and so genuinely cannot tell where friendship ends and romantic love begins. Her tragedy is that she begins her journey as a true-believer in the ideology of the Fire Nation, and unlike most other aristocrats, who have the necessary level of hypocrisy to keep their lives somewhat in balance with their desires, for her sexuality runs contrary the values of self-discipline hammered into her. The mystery unfolds for me as it does for our heroine, as she slowly learns more things about herself. In writing Cinder, I’ve really put off making any final decision, even with a completed outline and most of the first Book already written. So I’m generally uninterested in what sexuality Azula is in canon, but it does kind of lowkey bother me that there’s a trend in fandom to give the lesbian headcanons always to the women who are the meanest and/or most unapproachable. The sexual orientation of fictional characters is always a fraught subject, but I always approach the question as a writer, not from someone trying to find a definitive One True Canon™. Izumi calls their aunts, asking if they can pick them up from a friend's house And it’s quiet evenings interrupted by phone calls. It’s falling asleep, knowing that when the sun rises in the morning, you will still be loved.

It’s movie nights and brown strands of hair falling through Mai’s fingers. It’s the rushing waves of the unknown meeting the shore softly, colliding with echoes of laughter.
